Celebrating 15 years of FATXplorer
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the FATXplorer application! What started as a small project to try and make a better version of Xplorer360 has turned into an invaluable tool thousands of people use every month.
A few highlights over the last 15 years:
- In 2012, a patch and custom formatter was released to extend Xbox 360 USB sizes up to 2 TB.
- In 2015, version 2.5.4 was released. Currently the main “stable” release of FATXplorer, it has survived almost 10 years without the discovery of any major bugs.
- In 2020, FATXplorer 3.0 beta was released. It brought the widely asked for OG Xbox support and substantial speed improvements.
- In 2021, FATXplorer 3.0 beta gained new formatting tools for OG Xbox. These would later be expanded to include support for brand new BIOS projects: Cerbios and Stellar.
- In 2022, patches were released to raise Xbox 360 HDD and USB storage limits from 2 TB to 16 TB.
- In 2024, Xbox 360 HDD Maker was released, making it possible for anyone to easily make a retail-compatible Xbox 360 HDD.
What to look forward to in 2025
Research is currently underway in making solid-state drives Xbox 360 retail-compatible. There has already been a lot of success, but more work and research is needed to expand the support before it is released. A patch to add TRIM support to JTAG/RGH will also be explored.
You can keep an eye on the SSD updates here and on X.
Fun facts/stats
Applies to the 3.0 beta only. It is interesting to see how usage for both Xbox 360 and OG Xbox is nearly identical!
