Device Detection Troubleshooting

[Draft 3/7]

Overview

This page will detail the technical aspects of a device connection. Below you can find troubleshooting information for your device type.

HDDs

The following methods are ways to connect an Xbox 360 hard drive to your computer. This is not a list of all possible ways, but these are the easiest and most recommended.

Slim Hard Drives

Slim hard drives may be removed from the bottom of the console. It is just a simple SATA hard drive in a glued, plastic enclosure. Since the case is glued, you cannot remove it through conventional means. Fortunately, removal of the case is not required.

1. The best way to connect this drive to your computer is to use Microsoft’s newest transfer cable. You simply connect it to the drive, and then connect the USB to your PC. FATXplorer should now be able to see and use it.

2. This is not recommended for novice computer users. You can connect the drive with a physical SATA connection. This is mainly for desktops. Open your computer, find a spare SATA port, connect it appropriately, and FATXplorer should now be able to see and use it.

Normal (“Fat”) Hard Drives

Fat hard drives are located on top of the original Xbox 360 and are simple to remove. Just push down the front button and pull it off. This will require a specific set of tools in order to connect it to your computer.

1. The best way is to purchase a Datel XPort 360 Docking Station. It will allow you to simply put the HDD into the docking station and then connect it to your computer via a USB cable. No disassembly required!

2. The second best way is to use the Microsoft transfer cable. You simply connect it to the drive, and then connect the USB to your PC. FATXplorer should now be able to see and use it.

3. If you are unable to use the first two options, you are required to disassemble the HDD case. This will void the warranty! There are various online tutorials/videos that will explain how to do this. Once disassembled, you can connect the drive with a physical SATA connection. This is mainly for desktops. Open your computer, find a spare SATA port, connect it appropriately, and FATXplorer should now be able to see and use it.

MUs

Due to the uniqueness of the USB type, there is only one way to connect a memory unit to your computer.

1. The Datal XPort 360 Docking Station. It will allow you to simply put the memory unit into the docking station and then connect it to your computer via a USB cable. No disassembly required!

USBs

No description needed – just connect it to a functioning USB port on your computer!
